Communications service providers (CSPs) need a vendor-neutral, standard reference model to define all network devices and their related components that can be used universally within operations support systems (OSS).
This Catalyst proposes a Yet Another Next Generation (YANG) data model to provide a common data structure for CSPs to consistently manage device lifecycles across planning, infrastructure and service provisioning, service assurance, monitoring, upgrades and termination.
The YANG model will describe the physical attributes and layout of a network element as well as define mechanisms to collaboratively create instances of the model.
The project envisions defining every part number supported by a vendor as a template in the standard YANG model format. The data should also include key elements such as physical specifications (e.g., dimensions or power), slots (i.e., containers), ports, card-to-slot mappings. Vendor will keep track of versions of this data as they make updates to products.
There will be a common site where these templates can be accessed via application programming interface (API) by any carrier OSS system.
CSPs can pull this common equipment reference model into their OSS and use it as guardrails to create instances of inventory that will remain consistent across different platforms.
